The Devil Makes Three’s Pete Bernhard To Release New Folk/Blues Solo Album

Harmony Ascension Division Is Reminiscent Of Bernhard’s Early Work With A More Personal, Stripped-Down Sound

The Devil Makes Three’s Frontman/Guitarist Pete Bernhard is best known for his unbridled, barn-burning performances and driving roots, rock and bluegrass sound. However, with the release of his third solo album Harmony Ascension Division (Kahn) April 24 he is now showing a whole other side to the story.

Featuring nine original unreleased tracks, the new record is described by Bernhard as a “folk album that gave me a chance to worship some of my heroes” and one that he says is deeply personal.

“This record is about friendships, relationships, success, happiness and failure. Harmony. Ascension. Division.”, Bernhard said, “Many of these songs are about friends from my early teens and '20s so I thought the best way to talk about them would be by playing the way I did back then.”

To do so, Bernard headed back to his home state of Vermont during a break from his rigorous touring schedule with TDM3 last year and recorded the album in a small studio in the mountains with esteemed engineer Bill Esses. As the producer for the project, Bernhard enlisted fellow friends and musicians Robin Macarthur (backing vocals) and Tyler Gibbons (Bass) to help fill out the beautifully-simplistic songs and add to his signature finger-picking style.

“These songs are quieter and more personal than most of the songs I have written for the band,” Bernhard said. “This album is more like the original solo stuff I wrote before TDM3 formed. “These are all the songs that did not quite fit into the band instrumentation of TDM3 so you could say this album is sort of me going back to my roots.”

To support the release of the album, Bernhard is launching a U.S. and international radio campaign and hopes to schedule a series of solo performances around TDM3’s rescheduled tour dates. For the latest news and show dates, visit his website.

The official track listing for Harmony Ascension Division is as follows:

01 - I Knew You
02 - Land Of Milk & Honey
03 - Can't Find You
04 - Fool's Gold
05 - Dancin'
06 - Down The Line
07 - Long Night
08 - Waiting For You
09 - Lightning

Prior to Harmony Ascension Division, Bernhard released two solo albums with each receiving rave reviews. His debut, independently-released record Things I Left Behind (2006) was, as he says, “basically just me and a guitar, and a sense of introspection”. Both were deemed departures from TDM3’s driving, bluegrass rock sound, while continuing to capture the soul-searching essence and musical dexterity that Bernhard has become known for.

This is one great mellow album folks and just the perfect one to help you chill out in these trying times. Highly recommended!!

You can purchase this great album, and you should if you like his 1st 2 albums or are a fan of The Devil Makes Three, as CD + Digital Download ($12.50 USD) from HERE or Digital Download ($10.00 USD) from HERE. Not sure if it's a pre-order though, doesn't state.

Bernhard continues to write, record and tour with TDM3 and rescheduled dates are available here.

Tremendous Set To Unleash Awesome Debut Album "Relentless" May 15

TREMENDOUS are a rock band from Birmingham UK, an act heavily influenced by early 70's artists such as T.Rex, David Bowie, Slade, Mott The Hoople and others too numerous to mention.

The TREMENDOUS name is taken from the catchphrase of the American/Cuban comedian Joey Diaz. The album is dedicated to Mark's original manager/friend, the late Adrian Millar. He was the manager of the UK band The Babys and known for his work with Black Sabbath.

TREMENDOUS features Mark Dudzinski (Guitar/Vocals), Ryan Jee (Bass) and Dave Lee (Drums)

"It takes a certain degree of confidence to call your band ‘Tremendous’. Happily, this Birmingham-based crew have the chops and ear for a good tune to back it up. A tight yet warm marriage of Bowie-esque glam and driving contemporary rock". - (CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE)

"We just heard something Tremendous. Or a band called..TREMENDOUS!" - (RODNEY BINGENHEIMER)

Darlin' Brando Delivers The Honky Tonk With A Country Steeped, Dancehall-Ready Album "Also, Too…"

Darlin' Brando Delivers The Honky Tonk With A Country Steeped, Dancehall-Ready Album.

Also, Too… Will Release On June 19th With A Special Appearance From A.J. Croce.

Darlin’ Brando is the pseudonym of singer, songwriter and drummer, Brandon Goldstein. Born and raised in Virginia, he settled in Los Angeles after college where he found a thriving country and Americana music scene. Goldstein set up his drum kit and settled into the community playing stints with local roots music artists like country-rock band, Merle Jagger and folksy singer-songwriter, Leslie Stevens. It was during this decade in L.A. that he also began working on his own songwriting.

In 2009 Goldstein moved to Brooklyn and formed folk-pop band, Money and King with a childhood friend. He used the band as a vehicle for his own singing and songwriting, playing “lead singer” from behind the drums. Many moves and a divorce later, he found himself in Nashville at a low point where he decided to conquer his mess of personal demons and introduce the world to Darlin’ Brando. Playing drums with neo-traditional country artist, Tommy Ash, and frequenting off-Broadway honky-tonk gems like the American Legion Post 82 and The Nashville Palace was both therapy for Darlin’ Brando and research for Also Too… Suddenly dance ability (particularly the two-step) became one of his most important goals for his first batch of songs.

“My songs and the bands I’ve been associated with have been trending more towards folk and country for some time now,” he explains. “It was the time I spent living in Bloomington, IN and Nashville that really solidified my commitment to making an album of original country music. The mind-blowing singers, songwriters and performers I saw perform and performed alongside with in legendary venues gave the songs on this album their distinct direction. For arrangement and groove, it was very important to me that all of the songs were danceable. I really enjoy two-stepping and wanted an album that people could two-step to and that would play well in any honky-tonk bar.”

While in Nashville, Darlin’ Brando produced the 8-song album on his own as well as providing vocals and drums. The Streise Bar Band is used on all tracks but 4 and 8 and consists of Brian Clements on acoustic guitar and background vocals; Adam Kurtz on pedal steel; Jeff Malinowski on bass; and guitar master, Storm Rhode IV on electric and nylon string guitar.  Tracks 4 and 8 have Ryan Payton on acoustic guitar, bass, pedal steel and mandolin along with background vocals.

Also on background vocals throughout the album is Darlin’ Brando’s new wife, playwright, Edith Freni. The two sing a duet together on the first song, “When You Don’t Fight” and their voices are perfectly suited. “Edith contributed to the writing as well,” he allows. “This is supposed to be our sassy Tammy and George or Conway and Loretta duet with the music to match.” Friend, A.J. Croce is featured on piano for the song “Last Call”. “I met him through friends shortly after moving to Nashville,” he said. “I was over at his house one night for drinks and played him a demo of the song. I told him that I wanted to go for a rockin’ Charlie Rich meets Jerry Lee Lewis kind of sound and he offered to play piano on the track. I was honestly very surprised and flattered that he’d be down for something like that. So he came in on one of the two days we were tracking the band at The Bomb Shelter, requested an espresso and beer (at the same time), and pretty much learned the song on the spot.”

Darlin’ Brando has a knack for writing and arranging vocal harmonies and writing melodic hooks. And although drums are his primary instrument, he wrote a lot of the lead guitar hooks on the album. His love of country music pervades the album from the Spanish strings of “Those Old Demons” to the 1970’s country-feel of “Year One” . “Therapy” let’s his clever humor take the stage (Oh therapy/ You’re scaring me/ They say that you’ll take care of me/ But oh therapy, you’re scaring me) while the acoustic beauty of “The Old Man and the Kid” ends the album. “That song was a family affair as co-writes go,” he admits. “My mother and niece were in Las Vegas a few years back, killing time in a hotel room and decided to write some lyrics. My mom sent me the song and asked if I could do anything with it. I was impressed and felt that I could make it my own.”

Goldstein’s background is so varied (even playing drums in a hardcore band), and his influences so vast, that the songwriting on Also Too… defies genre and yet, the music still feels satisfyingly and specifically country.  “I feel like I’ve found a rhythm in the process and that the constraints of the country ‘format’ is really working for me.  At some point over the last few years, I just decided that I wanted to start writing simpler arrangements and lyrics for songs that could ideally be covered by others; that feel universal enough for other artists to find a way in. Country music is a genre perfectly suited for those kinds of songs.”

Now, with Freni by his side, he’s back in L.A. (“A lot of living, moving around and moving on…”); Darlin’ Brando is set to make his debut with Also Too… on June 19th, 2020.

02 Those Old Demons
03 Therapy

Kyle LaLone Delivers A Twangy Set Of Americana on "Somewhere In Between"

Kyle LaLone Arrives At His Musical Destiny With A Blend Of Classic Country, Alt-Country And Folk On His Second EP 'Somewhere In Between' April 24

The Los Angeles Sideman-Turned-Frontman Delivers A Twangy Set Of Americana

“…filled with classic-sounding country-twang." - JP's Music Blog

“Berklee graduate with experiential grit amongst his songs, throat, and Tele.” - DC Larson’s Jukebox Jury

Being a working musician is never an easy path and usually it’s not a very straight one. Having bounced from upstate New York, to Boston, NYC and now LA, Kyle LaLone feels fortunate to be a working musician and to have played with many talented folks in many different genres. The Berklee College of Music graduate is an accomplished session guitarist, songwriter and music educator who has recently added solo artist to his resume. “I have performed, toured, and recorded with dozens of artists of nearly every style in just about every setting you could imagine,” he points out. “From dive bars and clubs across the country to large outdoor festivals in the UK and Canada.” LaLone has toured the US several times, had residencies with different bands in both NYC and Los Angeles and has even toured Alaska. “It’s been a struggle to stay afloat at times but I am proud and grateful to be making a living as a musician.”

In 2016 LaLone released an eponymous instrumental EP influenced by classic guitar driven albums from the early 60’s. He is now set to release Somewhere In Between, a 5-song collection of country-tinged music. “The last few years I’ve played lead guitar with several different country and Americana artists,” LaLone describes. “It felt like a natural progression to write and release my own music within the genre.” A few of the notable Los Angeles Americana artists that LaLone has performed and recorded with include: Rose’s Pawn Shop, Elijah Ocean, Dawn & Dupree, Ben Bostick and Doug C and The Blacklisted.
Somewhere In Between showcases LaLone’s singing, guitar playing and songwriting with honesty and authenticity. “My main inspiration for these songs was moving through a breakup, getting sober, and reconnecting with myself through that process.”

LaLone co-produced the record with Adam Popick who engineered, mixed and also played on the album. LaLone then took the project to grammy-winning engineer, Hans DeKline (Lisa Loeb, U2, Pixies) for final mastering. Popick and LaLone met through a mutual friend from Berklee when LaLone was looking for someone to play bass on his first record. The two have been working together since. “One of my favorite memories with him is playing at a blues festival in Ontario, Canada where the headliner was Randy Bachman from Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who.” The other player featured on the record is Bob “Boo” Bernstein who plays pedal steel and who LaLone has gigged together with on the L.A. country music scene for a few years.

The record kicks off with the upbeat honkytonk sounds of “Think Myself To Death” and moves into the more time-honored country sound of “Our Love”. “I wrote this song starting with the line ‘Our love ain’t what it used to be,’ and finished the lyrics before picking up my guitar,” said LaLone. “The music seemed to write itself after I did. My goal was to write a very classic sounding country song in the vein of Hank Williams or Buck Owens.”

“Warning Signs” is LaLone’s breakup song while “Always Trying To Quit” and “Not Gonnna Drink Over You” are songs about the aftermath and LaLone’s journey of getting sober. “I said the phrase, ‘I’m always trying to quit’ to a friend in regards to smoking cigarettes and thought it pretty much encompassed my journey with trying to get sober over the past 5 or so years,” he says. “Another song that began with the title is ‘Not Gonna Drink Over You’. I wrote this as a sort of pep talk to myself when I was still hurting and healing from my breakup.” These songs started a writing process for LaLone where he comes up with a title or line and finishes the majority of the lyrics before setting music to them. “I’m not going to stay down, ‘cause I’ve got things to do | I’m not going to drink over you.”

LaLone is originally from Watertown, NY, a small town 1 hour north of Syracuse and 45 minutes south of the Canadian border. “Although I didn’t grow up listening to a lot of country music, I think growing up in the country has influenced me gravitating towards roots music in the last several years,” he muses. “I hope to write songs that depict the lives and tell the stories of those who grew up in small towns across the country, their struggles, heartaches and triumphs. I am trying to be as honest and vulnerable as I can in my music and in general. I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

Somewhere In Between will be released April 24th, 2020.

You can pre-order this mighty fine EP in digital format from here.

Ben Bostick Set to Release His 3rd Studio Album April 17

Ben Bostick Navigates The Quiet Desperation Of Life On His 3rd Full-Length Release 'Among The Faceless Crowd'

A Beautiful Melancholic Rumination On Working Class America.

“Ben Bostick is an audacious, trailblazing messenger with enough promise to bode a paradigm shift in modern music.” — National Rock Review

After almost a decade in Los Angeles, Ben Bostick is back in the beautiful southeast of Lilburn, Georgia.  The South Carolina native had spent a decade rambling around the U.S. before settling into LA, where he met the girl of his dreams and became a father.  Now expecting a second child, the family moved to Georgia where it’s a tad easier for a gigging musician to raise children.

Moving across country wasn’t the only change for Bostick. Eschewing a producer for Among the Faceless Crowd, the musician chose to make his 3rd full-length record on his own.  The album is self-produced, mixed and mastered (with the exception of a drum session engineered at Madlife Studios). Bostick also plays most of the instruments on the record with the exception of his LA band stepping in for a song or two.  “This record started out as a total bedroom record,” he explains. “I played everything on every track, until I got to the point where the music demanded performances that outstripped my ability on organ and bass.” The musician brought in Luke Miller (keys) and Cory Tramontelli (bass) to freshen up the playing and included his longtime guitar player Kyle LaLone on “The Last Coast.”  “We had played that song live a few times and I loved the melodic chord solo he came up with.”

Bostick’s rowdy sophomore release Hellfire (2018), was an album of 11 high-energy songs played live.  As Fred Mills of Blurt noted it had, “More twang per capita than the FDA recommends, with a sonic caloric intake that’ll leave you in a puddle on the venue floor.” Among the Faceless Crowd is a continued exploration of the characters we met on Hellfire, but the more pensive side of those characters. “This album is the sad cousin of Hellfire,” Bostick describes. “Whereas Hellfire was about pent up rage blowing up into a furious night of drinking, fighting, and bad decisions, Among the Faceless Crowd is the hangover. It’s the daily grind, the repetition and quiet desperation of life among the faceless crowd.”

Bostick crafted 10 gems that are unique on their own, yet connect as an album. From the forlorn and mournful openers “Absolutely Emily” and “Wasting Gas” to the bluesy sound of “Too Dark to Tell” Bostick explores the pain and loneliness of feeling insignificant.  (“I once was found, but now again I’m lost | On merciless waves I am tossed | I would tell you of His grace, and how it was I fell | But some tales are just too dark to tell”).

“The album is divided into two halves,” Bostick explains. “It would be the two sides if it were on vinyl.  The first five songs are from the perspective of disillusioned working men, and then we step into the criminals and sinners section with ‘The Thief’.” This is also the first song on which Bostick used the glockenspiel, which is also in “Wasting Gas” and “If I Were in a Novel.”  “Something about that pure chime gives a song an air of melancholy that fits well on this record.”

“The Thief” is about a man stealing things to support his family. “Central Valley” is about a man who goes to jail for a robbery gone wrong, “Too Dark to Tell” is from the point a view of a man who thinks his trouble may never end, and “Untroubled Mind” is told from the perspective of a man on death row.  “The songs on this album could all be construed as being from the point of view of one person, although I didn’t write them that way,” he relates. “Central Valley” came about when I stumbled on that mournful guitar lick during a time when I was mulling over writing a song or album about ‘The Rest of California.’ Living in Los Angeles or watching TV, you get an idea about California that is only a small part of the big picture. The lifestyle and politics of the city disappear when you get into the Central Valley, which, if it were its own state, would be the poorest state of the nation.  I met some desperate characters up there, one especially who inspired this song.”

A great song is one that matches a performer’s strengths and personality.  Bostick has been getting to know his strengths and personality as he matures and he has a knack for tapping into the soul of those who struggle to survive in the everyday.  “I’ve been curious about what it means to be a man in America now, and both Hellfire and Among the Faceless Crowd are meditations on that.  We live in a time where preposterous beliefs abound across the ideological spectrum, and I’m trying to think clearly in the midst of the noise. When I’m unable to articulate my thoughts, a song comes out. Most of my songs are saying something I can’t yet form into a concise and elegant sentence.  These songs are not ironic. They don’t look down on or glorify the characters. I tried to write what I know, what I feel, and what I observe.  Although the stories aren’t factually autobiographical, this is a personal album to me.  The emotions here are very real to me.”

Hair Of The Dog Release Great New Album "It's Just A Ride"

Scottish heavy-rock trio, Hair of the Dog, return with their poignantly apt new record "It's Just A Ride", their fourth studio album on Kozmik Artifactz.

The band reunited with recording engineer Graeme Young, owner of Edinburgh's' Chamber Studios. However, the record is a return to the bands DIY roots, having produced, mixed, mastered (vinyl master by Tony Reed, Mos Generator) and created the artwork and music video for title track "It's Just A Ride" by themselves - an approach taken on their self-titled debut.

Lending it's title from the infamous Bill Hicks routine, It's Just A Ride positions the magnifying glass firmly over the current state of our world and existence; commenting both on human nature, as well as the overall human condition. In his routine Hicks reassures his audience "don't worry, don't be afraid....ever...cos' this is just a ride". This is a mantra the trio have shared throughout their friendship, a friendship that spans two decades - 15 years of which have been spent making music together.

The record itself was finished in the summer of 2019, months before the first case of Coronavirus was diagnosed. With a release date of April 3rd, inconveniently now set in the epicentre of a global pandemic, the record and its themes have unintentionally elevated in its relevancy and need.

These are uncertain times, but it is in times like these that the best of humanity shines through the darkness. Life is uncertain, there will be ups and there will be downs. Don't worry, don't be afraid.....ever....cos this is just a ride.

Nashville Based Songwriter Chris Moyse Has Released New Album "Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers"

"With clear folksy music, Chris Moyse combines wry commentary with nostalgia, as he’s thankful we live til we die. Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers is precisely what its title implies, sardonic observation with stringed instruments in raw arrangements." - Melissa Clarke, Americana Highways

At times lush and full and at other times sparse and personal, Bitter Ballads & Cynical Prayers is the debut LP from Nashville-based artist Chris Moyse. After winning the New Folk songwriting competition at the 2017 Kerrville Folk Fest, Moyse found himself back at the drawing board. “I was trying to live up to some sort of standard in my songs which can cripple creativity. I had to learn how to write again and trust my instincts.” The result was a batch of 10 songs that is some of his most personal work yet.

Songs like “Time’s Gonna Tell” and “Dancing Round a Fire” offer up a different approach to break-up songs, weaving imagery together into brief snapshots of a person moving on from heartache with a sense of hope. “Live Till We Die” and “Hurricane Blues” feature fictional characters wrestling with topics like death, family, and finding one’s place in the world. On “I’m Not Your Man”, Moyse picks a Leonard Cohen-esque guitar part while singing “I belong to the highway / I belong to these strings / I belong where the wild wind blows / I belong to the song I sing”. It evokes a sense of growth and coming to terms with yourself.

Produced by Shawn Byrne (who has worked with artists like Mark Knopfler and Mary Gauthier), the record was made at two different studios in Nashville, TN with a stellar cast of musicians.
