New Bomb Turks - Switchblade Tongues, Butterknife Brains

 A quick surf of the web might lead one to believe that nothing much ever happens in Ohio, much like the Detroit suburb I live in, and because of the ridiculous, long-standing college football rivalry between Ohio State and the University of Michigan it's supposedly my duty as a Michigander to toe the company line and quickly dismiss our neighbor to the south as a place where men are men and the livestock are afraid. Feh...
Dead Boys, Rubber City Rebels, Pagans, Rachel Sweet, Devo, Pere Ubu, Tin Huey, The Bizarros, and, as much as I loathe bringing up her name, Chrissie Hynde (admittedly great until about the third Pretenders album, her politics now bore me to tears - to me, PETA stands for "People Eating Tasty Animals") are all reasons why Ohio deserves to step out of the long shadow cast by Michigan and, in particular, Detroit. For the life of me, I still can't figure out what the hell those guys in Guided By Voices are on about, though.
Taking their name from a character in 1980's forgettable "B" flick "The Hollywood Knights," the New Bomb Turks could probably give a toss what anyone thinks of Ohio or anything else for that matter. They came together in the college town of Columbus when the four members, all English majors, grew weary of sitting around with their thumbs up their asses and decided to form a band, a tale seemingly as old as civilization itself. From the beginning, the Turks seemed hellbent on administering a thorough amplified ass stomping or, at the very least, a deafening thrash about the head and shoulders. Ten years, eight albums, and four or five labels later, they show no sign of slowing down, turning down, or dumbing down.
After an amicable split from Epitaph, Gearhead threw them a lifeline and released "The Night Before The Day The Earth Stood Still" in 2002, recorded at a time when the band was without a label. Ballsy, eh? Gearhead, quickly garnering a reputation as a prime purveyor of joyful exercises in sheer volume, also had the good taste and temerity to release this compilation of mostly unreleased material (nine of the songs are covers) dating back to 1999 and three tracks recorded with Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders in Detroit. "Ad Nauseum" and "Action" (no, not the old Sweet chestnut) are ultra-crude and disheveled examples of sonic dementia, humming along at breakneck speed and bursting from the speakers like a spray of sweat. Eric Davidson's pyromaniac yowl at the end of "Action" nearly resulted in this scribe soiling his nappy.
Punters laboring under the impression that Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have (or had, prior to getting off dope) the market cornered on back-alley sleaze are advised to lend an ear to the Turks' cover of "Chip Away At The Stone." The stuttering, stop-and-start twitch of their cover of Warsaw's (the band which later morphed into beaten-by-life experts Joy Division) "The Drawback" is, quite simply, full grinding perfection, buttressed by Jim Weber's sawing, squalling, overly caffeinated guitar and Sam Brown's revved-up, Moon-like drumming. Unfortunately, at 1:31, it goes whizzing by much too quickly.
No slam on the Turks, but it's hard to imagine someone screwing up a song as great as the Devil Dogs' "Radiobeat." Quite predictably, they do themselves proud, belching flame and farting napalm, tearing through it like they've just slammed several pints and need to introduce Mr. Thick Dick to Mr. Urinal Cake. And it's probably safe to say that their breathless take on "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young" has poor old Faron Young twitching awake from his dirt nap somewhere. The seven originals included here, such as "Buckeye Donuts," "Bad For Me," "Law Of The Long Arm," and "Sammer'd" (an instrumental with farfisa and organ) - all outtakes from "The Night Before The Day The Earth Stood Still" sessions - are testimony to the New Bomb Turks' take-no-prisoners aesthetic, the band preferring to pound their chests like primates, crank the amps and let fly.
Try as I might (well, actually I don't try that hard), even as I near the age of 50, I still find it near impossible to find fault with endless yet honest reworkings of the E, D, and G chords (or whatever the hell they are - it's all alphabet soup to me). Let's face it - nothing can be truly new in rock and roll ever again, but with topdrawer outfits like the New Bomb Turks around, does it even matter?

Lords Of The New Church - Stories at Dusk

"Stories At Dusk" is a low budget (or should be) collection posing as an introduction to The Lords of The New Church but what it really is, is a hastily thrown together collection of somewhat difficult to find on cd songs recorded both in the studio and live after the band left IRS Records in late 1985 and were originally released as singles and EPs on small European Record Labels like Bondage International and Perfect Beat. During this period, The Lords experienced several years of instability where the original bass player Dave Tregunna and drummer Nicky Turner left the band at different points and later Tregunna returned for their final year of touring.

So what you get here is the four mostly excellent studio songs from the "Psycho Sex" EP (Things Go Bump, Follow, Bang Bang Baby Maybe, Real Bad Time) and the "Dance With Me" re-recorded in 1987 "slow" version and it's B-Side, their cover of "Walking The Dog." These tracks were recorded with new bass player Grant Fleming who replaced Tregunna for about 2 years starting in early '86. They also used a 2nd guitarist on some of the sessions and live during this period, Alistair Symons (rip).

The last four tracks are all live cuts from 3 shows in small venues in October of 1988, only months before they broke up. These tracks along with 8 others originally appeared on the live cd "Second Coming" released in 1989. By this tour, Nicky Turner had left the band to be replaced on drums by Danny Fury and Dave Tregunna returned on bass and they were back down to a four piece.

It should be noted the jewelcase art tracklist is wrong. This is the correct order and songs included. "Making Time" is unfortunately not included.

RAILBENDERS

No bullshit country from Denver, Colorado.

They've been called "country," "alt-country," and "outlaw country," but the phrase that might best describe the Railbenders is "hard country." This Denver, Colorado band has been playing unabashed, straight-no-chaser music that pulls no punches since 2000. Their music and dynamic live shows have made them one of the top draws in Colorado, bringing in a diverse fan base of all ages.

Formed by Jim Dalton (vocals, guitar) and Tyson Murray (upright bass), the Railbenders took a mutual love of Johnny Cash, Waylon, Hank Williams, rock 'n' roll, punk, whiskey, and threw it all together to create their own sound. Powered by the steady rolling' drums of Graham Haworth and the blazing guitar picking of Tony Nascar ("The Fastest Guitar in the West"), the band has garnered local awards, including "Top Country Band" by the Rocky Mountain News (2004 & 2005), and "Best Country/Roots Band" five years in a row (2002 to 2006) in the annual Westword Music Showcase.

The Railbenders have opened for country greats Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Daniels, and David Allan Coe. As well, they've shared bills with rock legends like ZZ Top, John Fogerty, Peter Frampton, the Doobie Brothers and .38 Special. The Railbenders won a multi-year sponsorship from Coors Brewing Company in 2004, and in 2007, they had the honor of performing at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival in Indio, CA, where they opened a stage that featured Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, Junior Brown, John Doe, Drive-By Truckers, and Alejandro Escovedo. And in 2008, the band played in the inaugural year of the Mile High Music Festival in Denver, sharing the spotlight with national headliners like the Dave Matthews Band and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

THE DEVIL MAKES THREE

As a drummerless acoustic trio consisting of two guitarists and a string bassist, the Devil Makes Three are not your normal alt-country band. While deeply rooted in the blues and country music, they enthusiastically incorporate elements of bluegrass, ragtime, and jug band traditions as well. The group also makes no bones about its punk rock influences, and despite the lack of a drummer, it always plays with the needs of dancers in mind.

Although the Devil Makes Three consist entirely of New Englanders (two members are from Vermont and one is from New Hampshire), the group formed in Santa Cruz, California and self-released its eponymous debut in 2002. Its sophomore effort, Longjohns, Boots and a Belt, was released in 2004, followed by a live album titled A Little Bit Faster and a Little Bit Worse. The Devil Makes Three then signed to Milan Records, which reissued their debut album. In 2009, the label released the group's third studio album, Do Wrong Right, which hit number one on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart. Recorded over a two-night stand at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma, California, the live Stomp and Smash appeared in 2011, also on Milan.

After a switch to New West Records, they released the impressive, Buddy Miller-produced I'm A Stranger Here in the fall of 2013. It marked the trio's first appearance on the Billboard 200. They followed it up with a covers album in 2016. Called Redemption & Ruin, the record featured guest spots by names such as Emmylou Harris, Duane Eddy, and Jerry Douglas. Early 2018 saw the band issue a pair of singles, "Paint My Face" and "Bad Idea," ahead of the release of the studio LP Chains Are Broken, which arrived via New West later that August.

During its initial 15-year stampede, nothing about The Cowslingers was low-key.

Formed in 1989, the band barnstormed the world, playing more than 600 gigs, from West Virginia to Spain, Seattle to Germany.

The Cowslingers' whomp-and-stomp sound cruised as many musical paths. Over nine albums, 12 singles and two EPs, the band explored dusty detours, from country to punk to rockabilly to hard rock to garage rock.

That eclecticism -- and Greg Miller's irreverent attitude, yelps and howls -- set the cow-punks apart from the herd. It also led to a number of reunion offers after the band called it quits in 2004, with Latina carrying on in the Jack Fords and the others forming the Whiskey Daredevils.

"We've gotten back together for a few shows and remained friends," says Greg Miller. "We recorded here and there, very casually. We never gave much thought or talked about recording or doing shows... We have done shows in Cleveland and Cincinnati and Columbus. Who knows, we might do more..."
