THE CRAMPS MEGAPOST - Part 4 of 4

25 - [2011] Live At Club 57!! 1979 (Plus 9 Demos! 1977-79)

CD, Partially Unofficial Release.

Tracks 01 - 13 recorded live at Club 57, NYC for/by radio station WPIX-FM.

Killer set of 22 songs, including an incredible 13-song live set recorded in 1979 with professional mixes for WPIX-FM NYC with full sonic assault! Probably the best Cramps live performance and recording ever, with Bryan & Ivy's guitars complimenting each other most brilliantly, Nick Knox's drumming is superb, and Lux providing great vocals and between-song banter. The version of "Human Fly" is like an a-bomb exploding in your living room! The top-quality sound on the 9https://we.tl/t-hrfxASdqRS demos that complete this CD have previously appeared on 1 or 2 reissues with inferior sound quality so get ready to hear them properly.

28 - [2017] KFAT- FM Broadcast The Keystone Palo Alto CA 1st February 1979 (Remaster)

CD, Unofficial Release.

The Cramps quickly became one of America’s finest subculture manifestations, bred from the madness of 50s and 60s b-movie trash at the turn of punk, Lux Interior and his motley crew of proto-gothic punks shred the walls of Keystone’s Palo Alto with a toxic stew of sexed up rock ‘n’ roll. They were an exotic cabaret of b-movie histrionics and debonair, pursuing lurid and sexual gratification. Lux Interior personified, and externalized what lurked behind the snarl of every rockabilly hero and even in death, wears it well. In Elvis’ strut, in James Dean’s wince, somewhere in the back of Little Richard’s throat was the Cramps… drooling all over your face and walking away with your soul.

The entire KFAT–FM broadcast of this legendary early performance by The Cramps live at Keystone’s Palo Alto from February 1979. Captured in their grizzly, diabolical prime and before the release of their debut Songs The Lord Taught Us.

11 - [1986] A Date With Elvis (1990 US Edition)

A Date with Elvis is the third full-length studio album by the American rock band the Cramps, released in the UK on Big Beat Records in 1986. The title was appropriated from A Date with Elvis (1959), the eighth album by Elvis Presley. The album was recorded in fall 1985 and engineered by Steve McMillan and Mark Ettel at Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood, California. The album was first released in the US in 1990 by Enigma Records, with the bonus tracks "Blue Moon Baby," "Georgia Lee Brown," "Give Me a Woman," and "Get Off the Road." The Cramps reissued the album (with bonus tracks) on their own Vengeance Records in 2001. The original album was reissued in the UK by Big Beat in 2013 on orange vinyl, and subsequently reissued again by Vengeance Records in the US, UK and Canada in 2014. It was The Cramps’ most commercially successful album release, reaching the US Billboard Top 100 and UK Top 40.

The album was dedicated to Ricky Nelson, whose version of the song "Lonesome Town" (covered by the Cramps on their first EP Gravest Hits and later included on compilation album ...Off the Bone) was a US hit single in 1958. It is also significant in that it is the only Cramps album to feature vocals by guitarist Poison Ivy, on "Kizmiaz" (as well as on the B-side "Get Off the Road" included on the 1990 reissue).

Robert Palmer, in The New York Times, praised the album and called it the band's best. He wrote: "After a decade together, the Cramps have learned to focus and intensify their inventive revisions of rock-and-roll tradition and their playfully anarchic spirit." The A to X of Alternative Music called it the band's "most effective distillation of psychedelia, punk and rock'n'roll."

THE CRAMPS MEGAPOST - Part 1 of 4

Lux Interior & Poison Ivy 1982

The Cramps were an American rock band formed in 1976 and active until 2006. Their lineup rotated frequently during their existence, with the husband-and-wife duo of singer Lux Interior and guitarist Poison Ivy the only ever-present members. The band are credited as progenitors of the psychobilly subgenre, uniting elements of punk rock with rockabilly.

The addition of guitarist Bryan Gregory and drummer Pam Balam resulted in the first complete lineup in April 1976. They released their debut album Songs the Lord Taught Us in 1980. The band split after the death of lead singer Interior in 2009.

01 - [1980] Songs The Lord Taught Us (1998 CD Reissue)

Songs the Lord Taught Us is the debut album by the American rock band the Cramps. It was released in 1980 on I.R.S. Records in America and Illegal Records in England. In 2020, Rolling Stone included Songs the Lord Taught Us in their "80 Greatest albums of 1980" list, praising the band for its "psychobilly sound that went way beyond the kitschiest moments of the Ramones or Blondie and into a whole new realm of garage-trash novelty".

The track, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, was featured in the 2022 American slasher film, Halloween Ends.

02 - [1981] Psychedelic Jungle (1998 CD Reissue)

Psychedelic Jungle is the second album by the American rock band the Cramps. It was released in May 1981 on I.R.S. Records. It was engineered by Paul McKenna and recorded in January 1981 at A&M Studios. It was self-produced by the Cramps. The photo on the back cover of the album was taken by the noted photographer and director Anton Corbijn.

Only half of the album's 14 tracks are original compositions, written by guitarist Poison Ivy Rorschach and singer Lux Interior. The rest are cover versions of rock and roll, rockabilly, and garage rock singles from the 1950s and 1960s; these include "Green Door" by Jim Lowe (1956), "Jungle Hop" by Kip Tyler and the Flips (1958), "Rockin' Bones" by Ronnie Dawson (1959), "Goo Goo Muck" by Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads (1962), "The Crusher" by the Novas (1964), "Primitive" by the Groupies (1966), and "Green Fuz" by Green Fuz (1969).

Skid Roper And The Whirlin' Spurs - [1989] Trails Plowed Under

Who knew that inside the musical half of the Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper duo, there was a roots fusion artist struggling to get out? After most of a decade playing silent Teller to Nixon's Penn Jillette, Skid Roper formed the Whirlin' Spurs to release an infectious album of roots rock and cowboy music. Take note -- not country music, but stuff heavily influenced by Rex Allen and the Sons of the Pioneers. The title cut, a lament about the death of the old West, is a delightful piece of Americana that shows off Skid's creditable cowboy vocals and, in particular, his excellent harmonizing with Jayne Robson. It's a complete departure from anything he ever did with his pal Mojo, and as such a declaration of independence. Skid shows rare good sense in not taking that newfound freedom too far and trying to do everything -- he and the Whirlin' Spurs are a real band, and he uses their expertise throughout this album. Jayne Robson actually gets a couple of the most delicious vocal turns, including the sultry "Johnny on the Spot," a song which boasts splendid wordplay. There's nothing here that even tries to duplicate the loony anthems that Skid played with Nixon, and that undoubtedly hurt the sales of this album -- critics and fans measured it against their expectations, rather than taking it for what it was. The fact that it was released on a label best known for punk rock and ska rather than roots rock probably didn't help. Taken on its own merits, Trails Plowed Under ranks as a unique and enjoyable work. If this album had been given a bit more support, it might well have spawned some radio gems and a new fan base for Skid and company. Richard Foss
