Current line-up of Sugar Wildman, Greg Miller, Leo P. Love & Hector Mattos |
The Whiskey Daredevils are America's finest country punk band. This band takes all the good stuff out of country, rockabilly, garage rock, and punk rock and leaves the crap you don't want behind. At last, you found your new favorite band.
The Whiskey Daredevils have taken all the good stuff out of punk rock, 60s garage, classic country, and rockabilly, but they have never been a knock off "retro" band. Taking up where the Cowslingers left off (1990-2004), the band is no stranger to the stages of the indie rock circuit. Always moving ahead, the band has released 16 albums combined on their European label Knock-Out Records and various domestic labels while consistently touring. The band has played in numerous countries over the years, as well as a kazillion festivals. The Whiskey Daredevils... slightly better than you expected.
Leo P. Love, Ken Miller, and Greg Miller from cowpunkabilly deadbeats The Cowslingers (a cowpunk band that played from 1991-2004 and toured 38 States, five countries, and had releases on nine labels) have teamed up with Bobby Lanphier (Crooked Mile) and Dave Bowling (Hayshaker Jones) and thrown together a rock and roll band with all the elements that are important in your new favorite band.
1) Make sure all songs have real American roots music as their base: All the best songs are garage rock, surf, country, blues, and rockabilly anyway. Songs that combine some or all of these elements are what is commonly called “rock n roll”. That’s what we’re going with here folks. In the best interests of everyone, the Whiskey Daredevils have decided that there will be no sitars, French horns, or harpsichords in the immediate future. No Frills American Rock N Roll is what the Whiskey Daredevils are all about.
2) When in doubt, play it a little louder or a little faster: This is just good common sense. Leo is going to play the drums really fast and loud anyway, so the rest of the guys in the band might as well keep up with him and play the song together. This has thus far proven to be a good plan.
3) Don’t be afraid to do something stupid: The Whiskey Daredevils risk themselves 24/7 so you don’t have to. They are poorly paid professionals that are experienced in providing stupid entertainment for “the people”. They are not afraid to do what it takes to provide you with top entertainment value while you pound down cheap draft beers in plastic cups.
The Whiskey Daredevils have already written a monster set of original tunes that are destined to become Top 40 radio smash hits, as well as twisting around such rock n roll classics as the Dead Kennedy’s “Let’s Lynch the Landlord”, Roy Clark’s “Dented Fender” and the Customs “Long Gone” to fit their Master Plan of Rock. Yes, your new favorite band has arrived.
01 - [2005] Greatest Hits
Greatest Hits is actually the Whiskey Daredevils' debut, though the band's lineup has long been a fixture in Cleveland. Most members of the group were in the Cowslingers, before guitarist Bobby Latina dropped out and formed the Jack Fords. He was replaced in the newly rechristened lineup by former Hayshaker Jones six-string slinger Dave Bowling and Crooked Mile guitarist Bob Lanphier. True to their name, the Daredevils play a little faster, a little harder, a little looser, and with a lot more attitude.
The band's hard to peg: It plays too well to be punkabilly, it's too punk to be country. It gracefully slides into Santo and Johnny's classic "Sleepwalker" in "Don't Go," but rocks too hard to be rockabilly -- and its members don't have a stand-up bass or wear faux mechanic shirts. Rockabilly fashion is one of singer Greg Miller's pet peeves, and he expands his list of dress-code no-no's in "Ironic Trucker Hat," snarling, "I hate your vintage T-shirts/And your designer crap/But most of all, I'm so sick of your ironic trucker hat." 02 - [2006] The Essential
“The Essential Whiskey Daredevils” is 20 tracks full of no frills rock and roll. It’s the kind of CD which will set a cultural time line of Before and After. Example of a conversation you will probably have in the next few weeks: “Yes Jim, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was considered a great record, but that was BEFORE “The Essential Whiskey Daredevils” came out. Now I see what rock and roll can really be like.”
Now, that’s just an example. You may have a much stronger reaction. Maybe you’ll want to quit your job, buy a guitar, and start your own band. That’s a good idea. You should do that. That job wasn’t going anywhere anyway.
Maybe you’ll want to drop out of straight society and start exclusively following the Whiskey Daredevils around on the road. Now that’s another good idea. You never know when we’ll start playing some of this new material we’ve been writing, and what alcohol fueled hi jinx we’ll be up to on stage. When things get confusing out there, you’ll be OK. That’s because you’ll be in the “Whiskey Daredevils inner circle”. And all because you purchased “The Essential Whiskey Daredevils” on Germany’s Knock Out Records… What a great world we live in! - Greg Miller

05 - [2008] The Very Best Of The Whiskey Daredevils
The Whiskey Daredevils combine the energy of punk rock, the raw honesty and twang of American country music, and the attitude of classic '60s garage rock. On this new album, the band convened with Detroit's John Smerek (Paybacks, Detroit Cobras, even that Kid Rock fella) at White Room Studios and recorded a new batch of songs that focused on the people around them in Ohio such as 'Gary Sez Fuck 'Em' the true tale of when a typical Cleveland guy didn't want to trouble himself to meet Little Steven at a bar and 'Jimmy Rogers', about a friend's idea of getting the ultimate country music souvenir: digging up Jimmy Rogers skeleton or the guy they know that tries to meet girls by lying about where he's from in 'Stories About Texas' and On the Cuyahoga , a song about the 21 year olds that die every year when they drunkenly try to swim across the Cuyahoga River to another bar. source

06 - [2009] Introducing The Whiskey Daredevils
At this point, the Whiskey Daredevils (singer Greg Miller, bassist Ken Miller, drummer Leo P. Love and guitarist Gary Siperko) could probably write a new set of cowpunk classics just traveling from gig to gig. Introducing the Whiskey Daredevils is the band's sixth album since the group debuted in 2004, following Old Favorites, Essentials, Greatest Hits, Live in Berlin and The Very Best of, and it's got 13 barroom howlers that feature the Daredevils' signature rock satire — everything from blues lampoons ("Left Me on a Train") to drug-bust surf ballads ("Thicker Than Wine") and creepy Taco Bell love songs ("Senorita").
This is the first album with guitarist Gary Siperko (who filled the big boots of founding guitarist Bobby Lanphier in 2008), but he's a perfect addition to the Daredevil's diverse rural-rock sound. He fronts the album's more awesome moments, like the riffing, mad Motörhead six-string on "Party Plates," an homage to a poor bastard who has to drive around with D.U.I. tags. In the end, it's just like every Daredevils album — and similar to those by Love and the Millers' old band the Cowslingers. That is, the music is smothered in grease-stained garage rockabilly that comes off something like Jason & the Scorchers and the Cramps. But rest assured: After these 13 shots, you'll shake your ass 'til the sun cracks through the chicken wire on the bar windows. - Keith Gribbins

07 - [2010] The Golden Age Of Country Punk
The original idea was to have a hootenanny and record some songs acoustic and live with banjos, fiddles, and slide guitar. Most of our songs always come together with Gary playing acoustic and me singing along on his porch. Why not see what happens if we flesh out those demos in a real "traditional" way? I mean, why not us? It's not like Uncle Tupelo got a special permit to do this sort of thing, and we are sure as heck more "country" than the Supersuckers.
The plan was solid. It was a good plan. The problem came when it was almost impossible to get everyone in the same room at the same time. We decided to put it together in stages. Not ideal, but there wasn't really any other option. Gary, Leo and I recorded most of the basic tracks one afternoon, and then Bobby Latina came by to do "If Only You Were Lonely" and "Rabbit's Foot" the next day. After that we brought more ringers in. Bill Lestock played all the great fiddle, and Paul Kovacs played all the terrific banjo. We thank these gentlemen for their time and their efforts a thousand times over. They didn't know us beyond our admittedly shoddy reputations from local beer joints, and still agreed to do it after just a simple phone call asking if they would. A couple weeks later Ken came back to Ohio, and dropped his bass tracks on. We mixed it a few days later, and here it is. We hope you like it. - Greg Miller from the liner notes

08 - [2011] The Whiskey Daredevils
The Whiskey Daredevils could be described as Elvis Presley meets Glen Danzig singing for Dwight Yoakam fronting The Cramps. Cleveland’s kings of cowpunk are back with album No. 8, and not a whole lot’s changed -- sonically, at least -- for this staple of the rockabilly scene.
That’s not a bad thing. On the self-titled effort, the Daredevils return (via Detroit, Wheeling and Santa Fe) with 12 new twangy, road-weary and sometimes downright desperate tales.
Standout tracks include “Bakersfield,” where the band finds “country music heaven” littered with 7-11’s; “Moderately Lucky Watch,” the down-and-out “Pawn Stars” theme song that will never be; “Santa Fe” and “Girl I Left Behind.” The record closes with two morbidly sweet tales of rebuked love: “Time Marches On” (the album's best song) and “Cold Dead Leaves.”
After nearly a decade together, the band underwent a few personnel changes this time around. Lead guitarist Gary Siperko is once again the front man (back for his third studio effort with the band), and Lords of the Highway bassist “Sugar” Wildman is filling the void left by singer Greg Miller’s brother, Ken, who left the band after recording the album this summer.
Despite those changes, “The Whiskey Daredevils” fits right in with everything the band has been doing these past few years. It would be easy to say it is the Daredevils’ “Greatest Hits” record ... except the band already called its first release that. - Nick Harrah

15 - [2018] History Of The Whiskey Daredevils Volume 3
In celebration of their 2018 European Tour, the Whiskey Daredevils will reissue their seminal 1973 Pye Records LP “The History of the Whiskey Daredevils Volume 3”. Long forgotten by the existing band members, this record unexpectedly resurfaced in a Parisian flea market only weeks ago. The cover art was painstakingly re-produced by Brian Willse from what is suspected to be the only remaining copy. This landmark of recorded music will be available only as a limited edition on Whiskey Daredevils Tour Dates as well as housed in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institute.
This is the famous “lost” record of the Whiskey Daredevils catalogue, a true Holy Grail for collectors and enthusiasts alike. Though the quality of the recordings on this record have never been in question, the record has achieved legendary status amongst collectors for not only its rarity but its reputation as a “doomed” release. “You need to remember that this was released on Pye Records just as the label was folding. The label had gambled very heavily on a Billy Preston release that had done very poorly in the UK. They were strapped for cash and had hoped the Preston record “Billy Does Skiffle” would strike a chord with young record buyers. Alas, they had greatly missed on the “great wave of skiffle” by a good nine years as the youth culture had moved on to The Sweet and T. Rex. This led Pye to only be able to print 200 copies of the Daredevils record, the vast majority of which sat in a loading dock in Bermondsey unopened.”, noted British music sage John Peel.
Surprisingly, the Daredevils failed to land a domestic deal for the album and it quietly faded from memory. “Anyone that was in 1973 can tell you, if you can remember 1973, you weren’t there.”, said Whiskey Daredevils front man Greg Miller. “The great wave of the 60s had broken and washed back, and we thought the party would last forever. We had spent most of that year touring Europe. We did the UK with Hawkwind, Germany and France with Uriah Heep and then a quick run of Spanish dates opening for Humble Pie. Leo was filling in on a run of shows with Gary Glitter, who at that time was still doing a psychedelic act as “Electric Dan and the Current”. That left me with nothing but time in the UK. I holed up in a small flat in Bexley working on a rock adaptation of Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor". I was writing lyrics to it while collaborating with an exciting pipe organist that would later become my second wife. Ultimately the project would come to nothing, but in that fog of that excitement and the heavy amount of Moroccan hash I was smoking, I just forgot all about “History Volume 3”. I might have had a child with that woman. It’s hard to recall. It was an exciting time of experimentation. ”
The Daredevils visas and luck ran out at the end of that year. The band was sent home by British officials after drummer Leo P. Love was arrested at a Billy Preston gig in Leeds for stealing one of Preston’s backstage “Old Peculiar” ales. “Yeah, that was pretty fucked up. It wasn’t my fault though because no one told me I couldn’t have one of those. I was just trying to give someone the greatest gift you could ever give someone and then the Bobbies busted me. I did not know! I did not know! Wait… What the fuck were we just talking about?”, said Love shortly after the incident in an interview in Creem Magazine.
This LP will be lovingly pressed by the German record plant Flight 13 and be available September 21st. A team of four German audio specialists formerly of Blaupunkt has committed to the project and will work directly with the master tapes acquired by Daredevils sound guru John Smerek. Smerek noted “it’s fascinating to hear the Whiskey Daredevils at that time, well before I was in the scene. These are the songs they played as rock and roll went from an underground movement to the big business it became. You can hear the influence of the gigs at Eel Island with Eric Burdon. On a few of the tracks I could swear it’s John Paul Jones on bass, but the tracking sheets say it’s Sugar. I know she was ill for a time after eating discounted gas station haggis. Still, it was a golden time for the band as these recordings will attest.” Greg Miller
