DUSTY COWSHIT [1995] Coventry & West Ham

Dusty Cowshit has since many years, back to the golden age of Billy the Kid, been a colourful feature and a great hit all over the country of Norway, from the sunny and beautiful small town Farsund in the south to the friendly but freezing Longyearbyen at Svalbard, as well as some other spectacular places in Europe like Malta, Palermo Sicily and Helsinki Finland. The band has played hundreds of concerts and performed on numbers of TV-shows, and is famous for their hilarious and first-class live shows.

More or less as an internal joke, the band was started in the year 1991 as a costume party live act. The joke was very well received, and the hay ball started to roll. Some weeks after the first gig the 9 clownish cowboys tied their horses to a Hells Angels prospect club’s establishment in Oslo, after a couple of days challenging ride from their hometown Moss. Thanks to the bartender’s vigilance, Dusty Cowshit got through the night just about alive. He was able to warn his fellow biker friends that the band draws their cap pistols on the intro to the first song, so that no one returned the gun fire. This “one night stand up” is fortunately still alive…

So what is Dusty Cowshit? Well, it’s a 9 man heavy music band. In a real vulgar-sparkling-cowboy-polka-orchestra way it’s all about entertaining you with a great live act on unusual instruments playing songs you may have heard before. Some of the instruments played are suitcase, spoons, saw, washboard and dried beanstalks in addition to the more common Prairie sound of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica, accordion and off Mexico-trumpet. If this turns you on, you will simply love Dusty Cowshit.

DEZPERADOZ

Dezperadoz (formerly Desperados) is a German Western Metal band and is the side-project of Tom Angelripper's guitarist Alex Kraft. The band plays heavy metal music that is heavily influenced by the soundtracks of the 1960s and 1970s Spaghetti western movies.

Alex Kraft (Onkel Tom, Sodom) started Dezperadoz originally as a project - back then called "Desperados" with Tom Angelripper (Sodom, Onkel Tom) on vocals. The intention was to transfer the rough atmosphere of old Italo-Western movies into today's world of rock and metal.

After the release of Dawn of Dying (2000, Drakkar Records), Dezperadoz saw a longer work break and some line-up changes. Alex Kraft decided to take over the lead vocal part. In 2006, Dezperadoz release the second record, The Legend and the Truth, produced by Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69) and published by AFM Records. The record turns out to be a concept album which brings to life the Western-legend Wyatt Earp. As special guests, Tobias Sammet, Michael Weikath, Doro and others are featured for some speaking parts. Support tours and festival shows follow.

In 2008, the third opus An Eye for an Eye, another concept album, is released. Traveling back in time to 1898, it tells the story of a man of belief and honor. Seeking bloody revenge, he kills his best friend and is ultimately sentenced to death. Through his eyes, we witness the last minutes of his life. Once more, this album is produced by Dennis Ward and published by AFM Records.

Throughout their career, Dezperadoz has supported artists such as Krokus, Gotthard, Thin Lizzy, Rage, Sodom, Doro, Volbeat, U.D.O., Tesla, and many others on stage. They have also performed at festival shows like Wacken Open Air, With Full Force, Earthshaker, Summerbreeze and others gigs and tours through Europe and Russia.

In 2012, with a new record contract signed by their old companions, Drakkar Records, the fourth album, Dead Man's Hand was released.

In May 2017, after a few line-up changes, the band released the new album Call of the Wild, a concept album about Billy The Kid.

Confederate Tales: White Mansions And The Legend Of Jesse James (1999 2CD)

The pairing of these two records in a double-CD set, both unusual country-rock concept albums steeped in history from the end of the '70s, is kind of a no-brainer. White Mansions was the better known of the two at the time of their original release, dealing as it does with the history of the American south, and it developed a strong cult following at the time, possibly as a reaction to the success of the television mini-series Roots, and the election of Jimmy Carter (the first Southerner – apart from Woodrow Wilson – to reach the White House since the Civil War). The presence of an all-star cast, including Eric Clapton, Jessi Colter, and Waylon Jennings, and Steve Cash and John Dillon of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils (then near the height of their popularity) didn't hurt. It's also the more raw and basic of the two – though a concept album telling the story of the fall of the southern Confederacy and the culture behind it, it is made up of songs that stand up better on their own, and shows a bracing diversity of styles, ranging from faux-19th century popular music to modern country-rock of a century later. Legend of Jesse James is slicker and smoother, and also seems to make the transition to CD a little better on a technical level. The booklet includes full notes and background on each song, as well as bios on all of the participants and a fascinating account of Paul Kennerley, the English advertising executive whose fascination with American history led to his composing the songs for both albums, and the participation of Glyn Johns as the unifying technical force behind the two productions. The sound is excellent on both discs, and the whole set is well worth more than one listen. And this is the only way to get Legend of Jesse James on CD.  Review by Bruce Eder, Allmusic.com

OLD 97's & WAYLON JENNINGS [2013] Old 97's & Waylon Jennings EP

Waylon Jennings attended an Old 97’s gig in 1996, and later that year joined Ken Bethea, Murry Hammond, Rhett Miller and Philip Peeples in a studio in Nashville to cut two tracks "Iron Road" and "The Other Shoe". The youthful energy of Old 97’s with the classic delivery of Waylon Jennings. Sadly, Waylon passed away and these recordings — some of Jennings’ last — never saw the light of day.

"Iron Road" would eventually arrive as a live version on 2005’s Alive & Wired along with "The Other Shoe" (which first appeared on Old 97’s second album, 1995's Wreck Your Life.) To make it even more special, this release has four more previously unissued demos: "Visiting Hours" (a live version appeared on 2011’s The Grand Theater Vol. 2), "Fireflies” (re-recorded by Rhett Miller for his acclaimed 2006 solo album The Believer.) plus "London I Know" & "Born On A Train".

1. [2007] The True History Of The Traveling Wilburys

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle With Care," "End Of The Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) were an English–American supergroup consisting of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty, accompanied by drummer Jim Keltner. The band recorded two albums in 1988 and 1990, though Roy Orbison died before the second was recorded. "Wilbury" was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, "We'll bury 'em in the mix". Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance and the term was used again when the group were together.
